There has been a recent buzz around an augmented reality application coming to the iPhone that is built to use the Twitter geo-targeting of tweets feature. I am pleased to announce that the much hyped iPhone application called Twitter360 is officially available on the iPhone App store. Video demo review located at end of this blog post.

The developers behind this application are from a French based company called Presselite. They are the same developers that have created current popular augmented reality iPhone apps such as Firefighter 360 AR App and the Bionic-Eye AR iPhone App.

According to one of the developers Antoine Morcos, “Please, note that Twitter 360 does not intend to be a fully Twitter client”, he says “our goal is to provide a different approach to the Twitter experience. We are already working on new ideas to be added in this application.”.

It’s great to hear that they are not trying to compete with Tweetie 2 or Tweetdeck iPhone apps, but having the AR functionality as it foundation and building the other features as the application matures is a great recipe.

Features

Twitter 360 annotates your tweets with GPS location information.

Your friends can now see, via Augmented Reality, the location from where your last tweet was posted. Geotagging is disabled by default for all users, which means you will need to turn it on by going to Twitter.com “settings” section in order to use it in Twitter 360 app.

“Latest Tweets” mode.

See the latest tweets of your friends (iPhone horizontal position), and the location from where they were posted (iPhone vertical position) using the Augmented Reality functionality. When a tweet is selected, a blue arrow (compass) is displayed to show the direction and the distance to the location from where the tweet was posted. The distance is updated in real time as you walk in the streets.

Touch the Star

To add your best Twitter friends in your favorites.

“Locate my Friends” mode.

List of all your best friends. Twitter 360 lets you track geographic movements of your friends, you can now see where are located your nearby friends via Augmented Reality. If you want to hang out with a particular friend, use this tool to go meet him / her. Unlike the “Latest Tweets” mode (which is more focused on the tweets), the location of each of your friends is calculated with the “location” field data on the Twitter account. When a friend is selected, a blue arrow is displayed to show the direction and the distance to the location of that friend. The selected friend is highlighted in blue. The distance is updated in real time as you walk in the streets.

Option to Auto Update Location

When you launch Twitter 360, a small bird will localize your exact position and update the “location” field data on your Twitter account with the coordinates, only if you want.

Google Maps Compatibility

The application is fully compatible with Google Map. It is possible to locate your nearest Twitter friends from your position on Google Map within the application.

Invisible Mode

Switch off the geolocalization option in the setting to be in “invisible” mode. Your friends won’t be able to see where you are anymore. Your tweets won’t be geotagged.
